THE CADES: creating a family legacy of philanthropy and innovation for the North Central Florida community
Dr. James Robert Cade and his wife, Mary, cultivated a passion for giving that has inspired the next generation of family members to embrace philanthropy. In 2001, Dr. Cade, the inventor of Gatorade, donated a Gatorade Beneficial Unit to the Community Foundation to establish the Cade Family Fund. Their gift became the Foundation’s first Donor Advised Fund.
Each year until his death in 2007, Dr. Cade directed the Community Foundation to provide annual grants to a number of his preferred charities including several professor chairs and key academic initiatives throughout the country.
Since his passing, Mrs. Cade and members of their family have continued to honor Dr. Cade’s legacy by generously supporting numerous educational institutions and charitable organizations made possible by his initial gift to the Community Foundation. In addition to funding higher education, local grantees include the Friends of Micanopy Library, the Gainesville Fisher House Foundation and Santa Fe College.
